Voice for Justice first met Roxana at a brick kiln in Sahiwal. During a visit, they noticed a woman bent over, worn from the hard labor, her appearance reflecting the toll of intense work. When they spoke with Roxana, she explained that her husband had fallen seriously ill two years prior. To cover the medical bills, they had taken a loan from the brick kiln owner, placing them under his debt and forcing them to work until it was repaid. Sadly, despite the medical treatment, her husband did not recover and eventually passed away, leaving Roxana alone with her three young children to shoulder the debt. Every day, both she and her children made bricks under the scorching sun.
Roxana, exhausted and burdened by pain from the grueling labor, felt a deep discouragement about life. Seeing her situation, Voice for Justice decided to intervene by paying off her debt and enrolling her and her children in a program designed to teach former bonded laborers new skills and provide education for the children.
Today, Roxana is thriving in the program and overjoyed to see her children attending school. She has no desire to return to the brick kilns and hopes her children will never again have to endure the hardships her family faced.
